Supreme Court Stops Demolition Drive In Delhi's Jahangirpuri, Orders Status Quo

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered status quo, stopping the demolition drive by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) in northwest Delhi's Jahangirpuri which witnessed violence on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti.

The court said that for the time being the action of demolition of the encroachment should be stopped.

Senior advocates Dushyant Dave, Kapil Sibal, PV Surendranath, and Prashant Bhushan appeared in the court against the action of the Municipal Corporation and apprised Chief Justice NV Ramana of the matter.

Terming the drive as illegal, Dushyant Dave said that no notice was issued to the people before sending the bulldozers to demolish the encroachments.

''The entire action is completely illegal and no notice was issued to anyone,'' Dave said. On this, the bench headed by Chief Justice NV Ramanna ordered to maintain the status quo.

''Along with the other matters, it will be heard tomorrow,'' the court said.

However, even after the court's order, the corporation was in action with JCB and it demolished some illegal constructions saying that it has not received a copy of the Supreme Court order yet.

It is worth noting that 9 bulldozers had reached Jahangirpuri on Wednesday morning itself and preparations were being made to demolish the encroachments of the riots accused.

Large-scale deployment of security forces was done by Delhi police before this action.
